It’s the first day of the Excel Tutorial week. Yesterday was Monday and Monday is of course the day that we need to take it a bit slow and we did so with an Excel Tutorial with the formula for checking future dates.

Today we are taking it a bit further. It is still kind of a easy Excel formula but it’s too warm you up a bit for later this week, when we are really starting to use Excel for calculating with dates and time spans.

But before I begin the actual Excel tutorial I need to explain something that you’ll need to know about Excel for later this week. Microsoft Excel saves a date as a sequential number. Excel has to do that otherwise the program can’t use the value to calculate with. The sequential numbering started on January 1, 1900. So January 1, 1900 has the value 1 and May 27, 2008 has the value 39594 because it’s 39594 days after January 1, 1900.

Today I want to show you an Excel tutorial for using the TEXT and the TODAY functions.

First you’ll need to type the formula =TODAY() in cell B1.

The project will take you ten days so you’ll need to type in cell B2 the formula =TODAY()+10.

Now you’ll need to select cell A3 and type the following ="The project starts on "&TEXT(B1;"MM/DD/JJJJ")&" and starts on "&TEXT(B2;"MM/DD/JJJJ") .

After you pressed enter you’re spreadsheet should look like this.

Microsoft and Yahoo: Together at Last

One of the most watched negotiations in the technology industry is finally done—sort of. What began as a merger dance between Microsoft and Yahoo has ended as an important albeit fairly mid-level search deal that will help both companies in the long run and should put Google on notice. It is not, however, the end of an era.

By now, everyone knows the core tenets of this 10-year deal: Microsoft will run search ads on Bing and Yahoo, though Yahoo can still sell the ads (in fact, Yahoo becomes the premium partner sales lead for all search). No money is exchanging hands, just ad revenue. And the Bing search engine becomes the engine that drives Yahoo search.

It's this last part of the deal that's the most shocking and earth-shattering. Yahoo, a company that helped establish search as the most important thing we do online (it was, after all, the first to try and turn its brand name into a verb for search), is giving up its core business. At least, this is how some are positioning it. Of course, that's not really the way things are.

It was nearly a decade ago that Yahoo stuffed the Google search engine into its site. That's right; Yahoo search used the Google search engine. The move actually made a lot of sense at the time. Yahoo's form of search was the least effective of anything online because it was built on an idea that wasn't scalable. The whole thing was essentially a browse tree that you had to dig into to find your results. (I remember that I could never find "PC Magazine.") Google gave them the search format that you see at www.yahoo.com today, though it no longer powers the search.

When you know this bit of history, and you look at Yahoo's homepage and the wealth of services it offers, you begin to understand that Yahoo hasn't been in the search business for years. What engine powers the results on its site is superfluous.

For Microsoft, this deal is golden and being struck at the exact right moment. The reinvention of MSN Search, Live Search, or whatever search is called into the unified and surprisingly good Bing has added a fresh spark to Microsoft's online fortunes. Partnering with Yahoo, in this way, gives Bing exactly what it needs—lots more eyeballs. You see, Yahoo may not be a search magnet, but the homepage is a start page for countless users—it is one of the most visited pages on the Web. According to the Web traffic measurement site Alexa, roughly 25 percent of all Internet users visit Yahoo. If Yahoo homepage fans start to use Yahoo's search and find the effective Bing, that will grow Bing's position and add to user satisfaction (I think they call that a "win-win"). It's important to note that Yahoo's current search isn't bad. In fact, our analyst Michael Muchmore rates it as a solid number three behind Bing and Google. If you look at Yahoo's homepage, however, you realize that search is just one small part of what Yahoo offers. In recent years, the company has done a better job of making search more visible on the page. There was a time when it was completely overwhelmed by Yahoo's efforts to become an information portal.

While Microsoft wanted and needed this deal right now, I don't think it could have been done without the hard-charging CEO Carol Bartz at the Yahoo helm. She is determined to change things and turn Yahoo around. With another secondary asset outsourced, the company can focus on its recently reimagined homepage and suite of services that include mail, Flickr, mapping, business, instant messaging, mobile, and more.

Obviously, one wonders if this deal is simply phase one for Microsoft's total consumption of Yahoo. That's possible, but, as I've noted before, there's so much overlap in services and technology direction that Microsoft would likely have to kill the Yahoo brand. This plan is better. Microsoft gets to leverage an existing audience to grow its own fledgling search brand and probably spend a lot of time peeking behind the Yahoo curtain—despite promises to "continue to compete vigorously"—and think about what other Yahoo services Microsoft can drive.

I do wonder how former Yahoo partner Google views this deal. I know that Bing is far behind Google in the search race, but it is a lot easier to switch search engines than it is to swap out, say, operating systems. This new leverage must, at the very least, frustrate Google head Eric Schmidt, as well as co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. There's no one of importance in the search space left for Google to partner with, so it'll probably have to release some new online app or service in the coming days and weeks to try and steal Microsoft's thunder. That may not be so easy: I expect the rumblings of this deal to be felt for weeks, months, and even years.

picoPower technology sets new standard for 32-bit MCU power consumption. Atmel’s picoPower technology enables the AT32UC3L to operate on less than 1.5 uA with the 32 KHz Real Time Clock active, and below 100 nA with all oscillators stopped. The device features Atmel’s true 1.6V technology, which keeps the device fully operational in systems with supply voltage ranging from 1.62 to 3.60V.

Embedded Capacitive Touch Peripheral. The AT32UC3L’s built in capacitive touch peripheral unit makes capacitive touch as easy as incorporating just another peripheral. The device supports capacitive touch buttons and sliders, and the hardware support enables the addition of capacitive touch to the application with no additional software overhead. The capacitive touch hardware also allows the microcontroller to wake up from sleep on touch.

Atmel's QTouch™ technology provides the industry's most robust touch solution with a high signal to noise ratio that improves the system’s design margin, increases EMC performance and raises ESD tolerance. It is ideal for applications where reliability is required, such as consumer user interfaces, industrial and automotive applications and those where high moisture levels are present.
FlashVault Code Protection. The AT32UC3L also includes a brand new flash security technology named FlashVault. FlashVault allows the on-chip flash to be partially programmed and locked, creating secure on-chip storage for secret code and software intellectual property. Code stored in the FlashVault will execute as normal, but cannot be read, copied or debugged. This allows a device with FlashVault code protection to carry a piece of valuable software such as a math library or an encryption algorithm from a trusted location to a potentially untrustworthy partner where the rest of the source code can be developed, debugged and programmed.

Peripheral Event System Eliminates Interrupts Processing. In addition to capacitive touch and secure memory, the AT32UC3L brings numerous innovations into the 32-bit microcontroller space with new functionality, improved reliability, and reduced cost. The AT32UC3L introduces Atmel’s Peripheral Event System for the first time on a 32-bit microcontroller. The innovative peripheral event system allows peripherals to send signals (events) directly to other peripherals without involving the CPU. By offloading to the peripheral event system the repetitive task of forwarding these events, the CPU will reduce drastically the time consuming handling of interrupts. This will free up more time for the CPU to handle other tasks in the application, and often allow the CPU to remain longer in one of the AVR32’s many energy saving sleep modes.
Clock Failure Protection. The UC3L has a state-of-the art clock system with clock failure protection, Frequency Meter, Real Time Clock with Calendar mode, a precision crystal oscillator tuner and accurate Digital Frequency Locked Loop. The peripherals include a 9 channel 12-bit ADC and 8 channel Analog Comparator. And the device is the first microcontroller from Atmel to feature an 8-bit PWM output on every I/O pin.

Atmel’s AVR32 UC3L is supported by the AVR32 Studio integrated development environment used for Atmel’s AVR32 product line. It is available free of charge on Atmel's website. IAR’s Embedded Workbench also supports AVR32 devices. Debugging tools include Atmel’s AVRONE!, STK® 600 Starter Kit, and JTAGICE mkII on-chip debugger.

Ericsson supplies GPON fibre-to-the-home networks in China

Ericsson has picked up important supply contracts for fixed broadband access systems with three telecoms operators in China.

China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom are upgrading their networks to provide high-speed broadband and high-definition IPTV services in Anhui, Guangdong, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Liaoning, Shandong, Shanghai and Sichuan provinces.

Ericsson is supplying optical fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks based on gigabit passive optical network technology.

These initial rollouts in China, as well as the endorsements from around the world, have demonstrated yet again that cost-effective optical fibre solutions are becoming the leading technology for fixed deployment," said Mats H Olsson, president of Ericsson Greater China.

Ericsson is not the only supplier targeting the China FTTH market.

Japan is already looking to make a move to 10GEPON and the world's first 10GEPON demonstrator has already been announced - by a UK company too. The introduction of bendable fibre will also get around another major obstacle to the proliferation of fibre optic lines.

Apple ups stakes in Imagination battle with Intel

Imagination Technologies has found itself in a financial tug-of-war as Apple moves to increase its shareholding in the UK-based graphics processor developer.

It is only a week since Intel raised takeover speculation when it took a 14% stakeholding in Imagination. At the time it was thought that Apple's 3.6% shareholding in the graphics company would turn any takeover move by Intel in to a bidding battle.

Now Apple has raised the stakes by increasing its shareholding in Imagination to 9.5%.

Apple took its first 3.6% shareholding stake in Imagination Technologies last December and it followed a period when Apple had been steadily increasing its technology links with the King's Langley-based developer of the PowerVR SGX graphics processor.

Last September, Imagination concluded a multi-year, multi-use license agreement with Apple which gives the consumer giant access to both current and future PowerVR graphics and video IP cores.

The importance of Imagination to Intel was highlighted by this week's deal with Nokia to create a mobile computing platform to rival the Apple iPhone.

The latest in our I can't believe someone makes... series is an LED disco shower lights system - a "revolutionary LED light showering experience," according to its makers.

Thanks to Technabob for this one.

Made by a company called Crosswater, the RIO shower head comes complete with 96 computer-controlled LEDs. The red, green and blue colours are mixed and matched to light up the small jets of water coming out of the 40cm diameter shower head.

"The low consumption LED lamps create a column of water an dlight with a diameter of 400mm working perfectly with 3 bar pressure," writes the company.

And if you just love adding to your collection of gadgets, it does come with its very own programmable key pad (pictured, right), enabling 12 individual lighting settings. I wonder if it is covered by a universal remote... TV, DVD, Hi-Fi, shower head...

But before you think, "I'll have one of those", note the price. The RIO shower lights will set you back a not-insignificant £2,799. Technabob kindly flags a more modest alternative LED shower light.

Who would have thought there were so many, when I couldn't' believe there was one...

Google Announces Chrome Operating System

Ouch. Just as Microsoft was poised to continue its netbook dominance with Windows 7, Google on Wednesday announced an OS of its own, Google Chrome OS, which will run on both x86 and ARM systems.

The emphasis of the OS is the same as what netbooks were originally designed for: light, Web-based computing. Obviously, Windows XP wasn't designed for such a scenario, but its relative light weight, low cost, and familiarity have made it a big hit with netbook buyers.

Google's new open-source OS will almost certainly beat XP and Windows 7 on cost, and will be lighter weight, but there's no telling how it will be to actually use. The relative dearth of Linux on netbooks also shows that people tend to prefer a more Windows-like environment. Google's blog entry about the OS says:

"The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the Web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

According to Google, the Chrome OS runs "within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel," and will eventually run on everything from netbooks to full desktop PCs. That's the key differentiator between the full-blown Chrome OS and Google's Android, which will start appearing in netbooks in the next few months (Google says there will be areas of overlap for the two operating systems, netbooks being the main one).

From a developer standpoint, the Chrome OS is good news, because there's basically no new platform to write for—any browser-based app will work with Chrome, just as it will in any browser on any OS.

It remains to be seen how the Chrome OS will affect companies like DeviceVM, which provides a quick-boot Linux-based environment that can be quickly loaded before Windows. DeviceVM, and rival Phoenix Technologies, provide access to the Web and multiple apps in seconds, far less time than Windows needs to load.

"The announcement of the Google OS further validates Splashtop's value proposition to consumers who are demanding instant-on, easy to use, secure computing," said Mark Lee, co-founder and chief executive of DeviceVM, in a statement provided to PCMag.com. "The market has been moving towards an instant-on model for several years now, and DeviceVM has already seen tremendous success in the space, with tens of millions of consumers already using Splashtop today, and 8 of the top 10 PC OEMs shipping Splashtop on devices this year.

Google says it is already talking with "multiple OEMs," and that we can expect Chrome netbooks to hit store shelves in the second half of 2010—yup, you've got a year to wait. Will you have Windows 7 on your netbook by then?

As one who has worked with computer books for many years, I can only imagine that Hacking Exposed must have evoked some secret envy from other publishers. This same book has been planned many times in many conference rooms throughout the publishing world, but in the end, it always comes down to the authors. You need creative and experienced authors with lots of energy to deliver this kind of detail and vision. If you spend enough time with Hacking Exposed, you could probably learn enough to start hacking networks yourself, although anyone else who has the book could probably learn enough to stop you. The fact is, if you really want to protect your network, you’ll need more information than any one book can hold. Vodafone launches first UK femtocell

Vodafone has announced its first commercial femtocell, in-the-home mobile basestation.

The head of UK-based femtocell chipset firm picoChip called it one of "the most significant steps towards full commercial roll-out of femtocells services".

It is picoChip silicon which is thought be inside the Vodafone femtocell, which the operator is calling an Access Gateway.

Available online and in store from the 1July, the Vodafone Access Gateway service is the first of its kind anywhere in Europe.

The femtocell will work with 3G handsets and act as a mini basestation supporting up to four voice calls at a time. It also provides more sophisicated call routing functions than are available on current home hubs.

"The gateway will boost indoor mobile phone coverage for customers who today, find they need to move around the rooms in their home to get a consistent signal strength,' said Ian Shepherd, consumer director, Vodafone UK.

The Gateway is available from free or as part of an inclusive price plan from as little as £15 a month. It is also available as a one off purchase for £160 or a monthly charge from as little as £5.

The Vodafone Access Gateway can be ordered from July 1 at vodafone.co.uk/gateway or in Vodafone stores

Microsoft Unveils Win 7 Pricing, Upgrade Program

Microsoft on Thursday unveiled pricing information for Windows 7, and announced that its upgrade option program will kick off on Friday.

The company also said it would offer discounted upgrade pre-orders for a limited time.

Starting Friday, consumers who purchase a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate at participating retailers will get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it becomes available. The offer will run until Jan. 31, 2010.

For those waiting until the October 22 release date, a Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade will cost $119.99 and the full package will retail for $199.99.

The Windows 7 Professional upgrade will cost $199.99 and the full system will be $299.99. For Windows 7 Ultimate, the upgrade version will retail for $219.99 and the full version will set you back $319.99.

Microsoft said these prices are about 10 percent less than what they charged for Vista – the Home Premium upgrade version of which retailed for $129.99 at launch.

For Windows enthusiasts who are planning ahead, Microsoft is running a promotion that will offer a more than 50 percent discount on the premium and professional upgrade versions of the operating system.

From June 26 to July 11, consumers in the U.S. can pre-order the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade for $49.99 and the Windows 7 Professional upgrade for $99.99. The offer will be available online via retailers like Best Buy, Amazon.com, or the Microsoft Store.

The offer also applies to consumers in Canada from June 26 to July 11, in Japan from June 26 to July 5, and in the U.K., France, and Germany from July 15 to August 14. Prices will vary by region, however.

Users with an XP system can perform a clean installation using the upgrade version of Windows 7. Windows Vista users can do the same thing or perform an in-place upgrade, which maintains all the data, files, and applications on their Vista machine, a Microsoft spokesman said.

OEMs will start shipping Windows 7 machines on October 22. At launch, the OS will be available in 14 languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Chinese (Hong Kong).

The remaining languages will be added on October 31.

In early 2007, deeply discounted OEM versions of Vista started showing up on e-tailers like Newegg.com. Microsoft also offered a Vista Family Pack, which allowed the purchase of up to two copies of Vista Home Premium for $49.99, provided that a customer buy Windows Vista Ultimate at full price, through retail.

A Windows 7 Family Pack is still under discussion, according to a Microsoft spokesman. As for cheap OEM versions of the OS, the spokesman said that since Newegg is primarily for systems builders, Microsoft does not consider that the retail sale of OEM licensed copies.

"It's possible that something similar would emerge, but it wouldn't be something Microsoft would encourage for broad use," he said.

Microsoft also released packaging details for Windows 7 this week, photos of which are available on Appscout.com.

What is Ubuntu?
Ubuntu is a version of the Linux operating system. An operating system
is the software that “runs your computer”. Microsoft Windows is the
world’s most popular operating system, at least for desktop computers,
but Linux is a completely separate endeavor.

The ball started rolling back in the 1980s, when a hugely talented computer scientist called Richard Stallman decided to create a clone of a venerable operating system called Unix. At the time, Unix ran many of the world’s industrial and academic computer systems. Stallman did this because Unix was becoming increasingly proprietary—it was no longer permitted to share its source code (the listings created by programmers), as had happened since the inception of Unix in 1969.
This was anathema to Stallman, who believed sharing software was natural and healthy. He decided his version of Unix would always be freely available, and invented the legal and ethical concept of Free Software to ensure this happened. Put simply, Free Software says users should always have the freedom to share software, without restrictions. On a technical level, Free Software guarantees the right to view and also modify source code, or even use it as a basis to make a new program. However, any additions or changes must be released as Free Software too, so others can continue to benefit.
